In 1926, the city was nearly destroyed by a hurricane. This setback nearly brought land development to a halt, but eventually the construction of the town’s Moorish Revival style buildings continued. Several of the city’s locales are included in the National Register of Historic Places.

Not only was Opa-Locka founded by one of aviation’s most historical figures, it is also the location of Amelia Earhart’s historical and tragic trip around the world.

The city is served by the Miami-Dade County Public School system, including one elementary school in the city limits. The town’s middle and high schools are located in neighboring towns.
