Named for Virginia soldier Francis L. Dade, the county and its surrounding areas was home to the Tequesta and other Native American tribes before the arrival of Spanish explorers in the early 16th century. The area prospered in the late 19th century, when local landowner and entrepreneur Julia Tuttle persuaded railroad magnate Henry Flagler to extend the railroad to Miami.
