History Of Atlantis At A Glance:
  • Broward County was formed from a combination of sections previously from northern Dade County and southern Palm Beach County in 1915.
  • The county is named after Napoleon Bonaparte Broward, the 19th governor of Florida. During Broward’s term as governor from 1905 to 1909, he championed the drainage of the Everglades by authorizing the use of dredges in north and south New River canals. While the results of Governor Broward’s Everglades drainage were mixed, it paved the way for much of Broward County’s development, first for agricultural purposes, and later on for residential use.
  • Developer Joseph W. Young broke ground for his Hollywood-by-the-Sea development in 1921. The development was incorporated as the City of Hollywood in 1925, with Young elected as its first mayor.
  • The Seaboard Air Line, southeast Florida’s second railroad system, was completed in 1927, providing express passenger service to Broward County from New York and other northern cities. The railroad is known today as the Amtrak (CSX) railroad track.
  • In 1942, the Fort Lauderdale Naval Air Station was established at Merle Fogg field. The naval base encompassed approximately 1,000 acres and had three main runways, a control tower, a barracks, and over 200 buildings.
  • After World War II, Broward County experienced a population and development boom as the county transitioned from agricultural to residential. Another population boom happened between the 1950s and 1970s, which increased the county’s population from about 83,000 to over 620,000.
  • The passage of the Land Use Plan in 1977 granted broader powers to Broward County’s government, giving officials more flexibility to manage and improve the county’s environment and overall quality of life. The new county charter effectively limited urban sprawl and ensured that all of Broward County’s natural, economic, and social resources will be put to good use.
